$2,000 for Wrinkl messaging patent prior art

Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 11,973,731, owned by Wrinkl, Inc., an NPE. The ‘731 patent relates to creating and displaying subsidiary channel-based thread communications in a group-based messaging system. It has been asserted against Slack.

Bedrock IP entity Cobblestone Wireless 4G/5G patent challenge instituted

On June 14, 2024, less than three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims 1-15 and 17-23 of U.S. Patent 7,924,802, owned and asserted by Cobblestone Wireless, LLC, an NPE and entity of Bedrock IP Co., Ltd. The ‘802 patent relates to wireless communication systems that transmit signals simultaneously over a communication channel at different RF center frequencies. The patent has been asserted against Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Cisco, HP Enterprises, and CommScope.

Intellectual Ventures Open Source/Kubernetes patent challenge instituted

On June 14, 2024, less than three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,949,785, owned by Intellectual Ventures II LLC. The ‘785 patent relates to a system of communication via virtual networks. It has been asserted against JP Morgan Chase Bank, Liberty Mutual Holding Company, and Comerica. The ‘785 patent is purportedly related to open source container orchestration systems for automating computer applications, such as Kubernetes. This filing was a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in the Open Source zone.

European Patent Litigation and Non-Practicing Entities: A Large and Looming Threat

JUVE Patent has published an article written by Jessica L.A. Marks, SEP & Foreign Managing Counsel at Unified Patents, over the growing presence of US-based Patent Assertion Entities (PAEs) spreading into Europe. Eight out of the top ten most active NPEs in Europe are US-based companies. However, NPEs are a large and growing part of the European landscape and are poised to increase with the introduction of the UPC.

DynaIP entity, Autonomous IP, self-driving patent challenged

On June 11, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,127,818, owned and asserted Autonomous IP, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity. The '818 patent is directed to autonomous vehicle navigation including detecting and avoiding emergency vehicles. It has been asserted against Tesla and Lyft.
