Fortress entity DivX video codec patent affirmed invalid by Federal Circuit

On June 24, 2025, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Office's final decision, in a summary Rule 36 affirmance, confirming that the challenged claims 1 and 10 of U.S. Patent 10,326,987 were unpatentable. Owned by DivX, LLC, an affiliate of Fortress Investment Group, this filing was a part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone. The '987 patent was asserted against Hulu and is directed to encoding alternative streams of video for use in adaptive bitrate streaming.

Fortress entity, Entropic, broadcast cable patent found invalid

On August 7, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of all the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,210,362, owned and asserted by Entropic Communications, an NPE and Fortress IP subsidiary. The ’362 patent generally relates to a wideband receiver that outputs a selected plurality of television channels to a demodulator. The patent was asserted against Cox, Comcast, and Charter Communications.

On November 22, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,228,910, owned by Entropic Communications, LLC, an NPE and a Fortress IP entity. The '910 patent relates to aggregating packets for transmission to a destination node and has been asserted against Comcast, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, and Dish.
