Velos HEVC video codec patent challenged

On September 18, 2026, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 11,786,596, owned by Velos Media, an NPE. The '596 patent generally relates to methods of encoding video data, and specifically encoding or decoding coefficients for a transform unit using sign bit hiding. The patent has not been in litigation but is related to patents that have been asserted against streaming applications.

WirelessWerx IP geofencing patent challenge granted

On September 23, 2026, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,009,037, owned by WirelessWerx IP LLC, an NPE and Dynamic IP Deals LLC entity. The ‘037 patent is directed to tracking and managing wireless devices using geofencing techniques. It is currently asserted against Flytrex, EZ Web Enterprises, and Parking Guidance Systems.

Fortress Investment entity DivX video playback patent challenge granted

On September 18, 2026, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,574,716, owned and asserted by DivX LLC, an NPE and entity of Fortress Investment Group LLC. This overcame DivX’s Pre-Order paper seeking denial. The ‘716 patent is generally directed to progressive video playback systems where a client application on a device retrieves portions of a media file from a remote server and plays the media as it is being downloaded. The ‘716 patent has not been asserted in litigation, however, it is related to U.S. Patent 10,412,141 which was asserted against Realtek, TCL, and others.

VE Opening cross-application search patent challenged

On September 18, 2026, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,916,079, owned by VE Opening LLC, an NPE. The '079 patent generally relates to methods of enabling information sharing between applications on a computer, and specifically performing a search for content across multiple applications and linking/displaying content from those applications as part of a search result list. The '079 patent is being asserted in litigation against Upland Software and others. All VE Opening cases are being litigated by David Bennett at Direction IP.

Malikie Wi-Fi patent challenge granted

On September 16, 2026, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 12,395,899, another patent owned by Malikie Innovations Limited, an NPE and entity of Key Patent Innovations Limited. This overcame Malikie’s Pre-Order paper seeking denial. The ‘899 patent relates to the negotiation of the prioritization of network management traffic by Wi-Fi stations and access points. This negotiation involves transmitting management frame quality of service (MFQ) policies and requests for changes to MFQ policies between stations and access points.
