ETRI/HBNU video codec patent likely invalid

On April 19, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an PGR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 11,212,553, owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Hanbat National University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation. The ‘553 patent is directed to decoding methods and apparatuses that use intra-prediction to reconstruct an image. The ‘553 patent is a recently issued patent that has been identified as potentially essential to the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard.

Entangled Media file sharing patent challenged

On April 17, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,484,260, owned by Entangled Media LLC. The patent relates to operating on files located on multiple devices using a singular file system and is being asserted against Dropbox.

IP Bridge video codec patent invalidity confirmed by PTAB in ex parte appeal

On March 31, 2023, the PTAB confirmed the examiner’s rejection of all claims in the ex parte reexamination of U.S. Patent 7,515,635, owned by IP Bridge. The patent is claimed to be essential as part of the Access Advance patent pool, as well as SISVEL’s VP9 and AV1 patent pools. This was an appellate decision by the PTAB agreeing that all claims are unpatentable.

CTD Networks cybersecurity patent challenged

On April 7, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,438,614, owned by CTD Networks, LLC. The patent relates to a network threat and response system and is being asserted against Akamai Technologies, Amazon, Cisco, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Musarubra US, Palo Alto Networks, AT&T, and Verizon.

Longhorn HD's cybersecurity patent affirmed invalid by Federal Circuit

On April 10, 2023, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Office's final decision, in a summary Rule 36 affirmance, confirming that the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,260,846, owned by Longhorn HD LLC, were unpatentable. Longhorn HD is an affiliate of Alpha Alpha Intellectual Partners, LLC. The ’846 patent was previously owned by Intellectual Ventures and is directed to cybersecurity techniques including detecting malicious network behavior. It had been asserted against Fortinet, Juniper Networks, and Check Point, but new assertions include NetScout Systems, Mitel Software, and Trend Micro.
