Fortress Investment entity DivX video playback patent challenged

On July 20, 2026, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,574,716, owned and asserted by DivX LLC, an NPE and entity of Fortress Investment Group LLC. The ‘716 patent is generally directed to progressive video playback systems where a client application on a device retrieves portions of a media file from a remote server and plays the media as it is being downloaded. The ‘716 patent has not been asserted in litigation, however, it is related to U.S. Patent 10,412,141 which was asserted against Realtek, TCL, Samsung, Hulu, and Amazon.

AutoConnect Holdings vehicle network patent challenge granted

On July 13, 2026, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,290,153, owned and asserted by AutoConnect Holdings LLC, an NPE. The ‘153 patent relates to device discovery methods and systems for controlling access of a communication device to an on-board vehicle network. It has been asserted against GM, Toyota, and Ford.

Malikie cryptography patent challenged

On July 9, 2026, Unified filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,372,960, owned by Malikie Innovations Limited, an NPE and entity of Key Patent Innovations Limited. The ‘960 patent relates to finite field calculations in cryptography. The patent has been asserted against Core Scientific, Foundry Digital, and MARA Holdings. Malikie Innovations has filed several other litigations funded by Key Patent Innovations Limited against networking communications, apps, and Wi-Fi devices.

NovaCloud Licensing bit streaming patent challenged

On June 30, 2026, Unified filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,145,721 owned and asserted by NovaCloud Licensing LLC, an NPE. The ‘721 patent relates to a method of downloading a multimedia file from a server to a user device using, at least in part, a bandwidth-limited connection. It is currently asserted against Charter Communications, Comcast, Amazon, SAP, Meta, and Cox Communications.

Umbra Tech virtual network patent challenge granted

On June 26, 2026, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on all challenged claims (1-20) of U.S. Patent 12,452,192, owned and asserted by Umbra Technologies Ltd. The ’192 patent is generally directed to virtual network systems where a control server sends a ranked list of access point servers to an endpoint. The endpoint device then uses this ranked list to select the access point server to which it will build a tunnel to the network. It has been asserted against Zscaler.
