IP Valuation Partners entity, 5G IP Holdings, 5G patent challenged

On August 21, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,813,163, owned and asserted by 5G IP Holdings LLC, an NPE and IP Valuation Partners, LLC entity. The '163 patent generally relates to discontinuous reception (DRX) and utilizing slots within subframes to adapt DRX to function within the 5G frame structure. The patent is currently being asserted against Apple and had previously been asserted against Samsung.

Adnexus advertising patent challenge instituted

On August 18, 2023, less than a month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,719,101, owned and asserted by Adnexus, Inc., an NPE. The ‘101 patent relates to on-line advertising and has been asserted against Amazon, Meta Platforms, LinkedIn, Google, and eBay.

Magnetar Capital entity Togail Technologies 3GPP patent likely invalid

On August 18, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 10,791,502, owned by Togail Technologies Ltd., a Magnetar Capital entity. The ’502 patent relates to error-handling procedures for system information requests in communications and has been asserted against 3GPP devices. It is currently being asserted against Apple and had been asserted against TCL Technology Group.

Ask Sydney image search patent reexam instituted

On August 18, 2023, six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,474,705, owned and asserted by Ask Sydney, LLC, an NPE. The ‘705 patent relates to analyzing tags associated with a sequence of images presented to a user to guide a user to a current interest. The patent has been asserted against Google, Amazon.com Services, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Snap.

Intellectual Ventures vehicle monitoring patent held invalid

On August 9, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,291,475 unpatentable. The ’475 patent relates to alerting a recipient regarding a violation of a vehicle, such as a speeding violation, and had been asserted in district court against Toyota, GM, and Honda.
