INPADOC Extended Families can now be searched on Unified's Portal

These features are available in the Patent Search portal, as well as OPAL’s IEEE, 3GPP, and Video Codec landscapes, to enable accurate top-down counting and analysis. 

DOCDB simple families typically include a collection of patent applications covering the same technical content.

The charts below describe how a set of patents can have 4 separate simple families. The priorities taken into account are:

  1. First filings - A first filing is a foreign application claimed under the Paris Convention.

  2. Provisional first filings - A provisional first filing is a U.S. provisional application.

  3. Equivalents to first filings - An equivalent to a first filing is a U.S. continuation-in-part.

The concept of a “simple” family excludes:

  • Applications that are a continuation of an existing parent application

  • Applications that are a division of an existing parent application

Continuations and divisions are considered to cover the same technical content as the parent application. Continuations and divisions will always be in a patent family with the parent application, regardless of the priorities that they claim.

An extended patent family is a collection of patent documents covering a technology. The technical content covered by the applications is similar, but not necessarily the same. Members of an extended patent family will have at least one priority in common with at least one other member - either directly or indirectly. Hence, the four families above, become one extended family.

Therefore, the priorities taken into account are:

  • First filings, provisional first filings, and equivalents to first filings (for definitions of these terms, see above)

  • Priorities that refer to an earlier related application, whether a domestic or a PCT filing

Heeeerrrreees Patty! World's First Patent Chatbot

Unified is pleased to announce the latest addition to its patent analytics tools, ‘Ask Patty’ - Unified’s first AI ChatBot. Patty is our new interactive chatbot assistant designed to enhance the user experience on our Portal. It will automatically pop up on every patent information page.

With Patty, users can interact directly and ask questions. Conversation history is stored anonymously so that the system can analyze data for future use and assist in building products that cater to our users' specific needs.

Powered by OpenAI, users can have natural language conversations, regenerate individual responses, or reset the entire discussion.

Patty has general world knowledge, including patent law. The system provides Patty with patent metadata displayed on the current page including important dates, inventor names, and many other bibliographic details.

Patty features two modes. In “Document-Only Mode”, Patty answers questions strictly based on the current patent document. When the toggle is flipped, answers utilize both document content and the model's external knowledge for more comprehensive insights.

Track LIEs (Litigation … ) in Unified’s Portal

As part of ongoing deterrence activities, Unified’s Portal is introducing the most comprehensive tracker of Litigation Investment Entities (LIEs). Tracking and reporting will be conducted on at least a quarterly basis and will attempt to shed light on this growing but nonetheless little-understood part of the patent litigation landscape. 

The LIEs tracker will consist of two components - a field for NPE Aggregator or NPE parent company of multiple NPEs, and the second is an option if a case is backed by a secured interest or by third-party financing. 

Users can use the plaintiff specific filters to search for entities such as IP Edge or Acacia. Using the Third Party Financing filter, a list of cases will be generated where a secured interest or known third party has an investment into a patent that has been litigated.

In addition to being able to search for NPE Aggregators and Third Party Financing Commitments, the case deal page will provide flags to understand if an entity is part of NPE Aggregator and Financed, such as Ridgeview IP LLC.

Also in the tracker, users can understand the true impact of LIEs and NPE Aggregators by using the Annual Report Tool for a graphical point of view.

OPAL, world's most comprehensive SEP landscape tool introduces VENN to automatically show licensor overlap

Unified Portal’s OPAL (Objective PAtent Landscape) report was designed to address asymmetries in the licensing of standard essential patents and to create a more fair and transparent patent licensing process around core patents supporting next waves of consumer technology growth. Portal’s OPAL recently launched its Advanced Analytics for IEEE, Video Codecs, and 3GPP. Users can understand if a given area contains certain contributors or patent pools. In addition, it allows for an advance breakdown between the positive and negative training labels.

For example, the graph below looks at Sisvel WiFi 6 Members that account for 155 of the positive labels (Blue Circle) and 251 of the Negative Labels (Orange Circle). This is the first tool to demonstrate the overlap between licensors, pools and standards.

 
 

In another example below, the same can be said of IEEE contributors with 884 positive labels and 2,139 negative labels.

 
 

For 3GPP, users can understand the relationship between the various generations of cellular technology.

 
 

For Video Codec, Portal users can select between the numerous pools and understand the various breakdowns in relationship to the entire video codec universe.
