Intellectual Ventures Open Source/Kubernetes patent challenge instituted

On June 14, 2024, less than three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,949,785, owned by Intellectual Ventures II LLC. The ‘785 patent relates to a system of communication via virtual networks. It has been asserted against JP Morgan Chase Bank, Liberty Mutual Holding Company, and Comerica. The ‘785 patent is purportedly related to open source container orchestration systems for automating computer applications, such as Kubernetes. This filing was a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in the Open Source zone.

Intellectual Ventures vehicle monitoring patent held invalid

On August 9, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. v. Intellectual Ventures II LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,291,475 unpatentable. The ’475 patent relates to alerting a recipient regarding a violation of a vehicle, such as a speeding violation, and had been asserted in district court against Toyota, GM, and Honda.

On August 11, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,291,475, owned by Intellectual Ventures II LLC. The ’475 patent relates to alerting a recipient regarding a violation of a vehicle, such as a speeding violation, and has been asserted in district court against Toyota, GM, and Honda.
