World's Most Comprehensive Database for Unified Patent Court (UPC) cases now part of Unified's Portal

As the Unified Patent Court (UPC) has begun to hear cases, Unified's Portal now tracks and allows users to examine the dockets to receive real-time case information. Portal users can filter by Case Numbers, Patent Numbers, Actions, Respondents, Claimants, Representatives, Judges, and Filing Dates. It includes all public documents available and all docket metadata.

Currently Unified’s Portal contains 232 total cases, with 97 cases of Counterclaims for Revocation, 79 cases of Infringement Actions, 25 cases of Revocations, and the remaining 31 cases involving Appeals, Provisional Measures, or other requests. Portal continues to update the cases and case information on a daily basis, proving to be the most comprehensive database of patent litigation around the world.

Case numbers are linked to the UPC, a court composed of judges from all participating Member States of the European Union. Patent numbers are linked to Portal’s patent information page where users can find detailed information about the individual patent.

Patent transaction data now available through Q1 of 2023

Unified’s Portal now includes patent transaction data through Q1 of 2023. Users can search for patents that are For Sale or Likely Sold to understand secondary market behavior and make predictions on future assertions activity. This data is available through Richardson Oliver Insights, an insights provider offering a proprietary deal database and deep connections with the patent broker and seller community. Richardson Oliver Insights have provided customers with actionable information in the form of reports, analysis, and insights on live information on specific assets.

Wi-Fi 6 improvements resulting in more litigation

In the first article of a two-part series posted on IPWatchdog, Samuel Baird, Director of Analytics at Unified Patents, and Craig Thompson, GM/COO for Unified Consulting, recently used OPEN’s IEEE and OPAL’s Wi-Fi 6 landscape to understand how 3GPP technologies have migrated in Wi-Fi 6. With these core technologies now embedded with Wi-Fi 6, this creates an SEP monetization target, which ultimately leads to more litigation. In addition, the recent changes to the IEEE’s IPR rules introduce more uncertainty about what is permitted to be used in assessing a RAND rate and remove some of the restrictions on licensors seeking injunctions. With more companies invested into Wi-Fi 6 and the rule change that has created uncertainty, this will only lead to more litigation.

In Part II, the research will look at how the IEEE’s recent IPR rule changes will affect the trends and technologies detailed in the first post.

OPAL, world's most comprehensive SEP landscape tool introduces VENN to automatically show licensor overlap

Unified Portal’s OPAL (Objective PAtent Landscape) report was designed to address asymmetries in the licensing of standard essential patents and to create a more fair and transparent patent licensing process around core patents supporting next waves of consumer technology growth. Portal’s OPAL recently launched its Advanced Analytics for IEEE, Video Codecs, and 3GPP. Users can understand if a given area contains certain contributors or patent pools. In addition, it allows for an advance breakdown between the positive and negative training labels.

For example, the graph below looks at Sisvel WiFi 6 Members that account for 155 of the positive labels (Blue Circle) and 251 of the Negative Labels (Orange Circle). This is the first tool to demonstrate the overlap between licensors, pools and standards.

In another example below, the same can be said of IEEE contributors with 884 positive labels and 2,139 negative labels.

For 3GPP, users can understand the relationship between the various generations of cellular technology.

For Video Codec, Portal users can select between the numerous pools and understand the various breakdowns in relationship to the entire video codec universe.

Unified's OPAL report is a one-of-a-kind patent landscaping tool that leverages advanced machine-learning techniques to create a flexible solution for negotiating and licensing Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). Toronto Globe reports on Unified's in-depth portfolio analysis of Blackberry and its delayed sale to NPE

At the beginning of 2022, BlackBerry announced that Catapult IP Innovations Inc. had agreed to buy several patents in a deal worth over $400-million dollars, but by June, the deal was off. Unified’s Director of Analytics, Sam Baird, analyzed the potential value of the divested portfolio of 37,175 patents, which would be one of the largest patent deals in the past decade. Mr. Baird has noted the buyer’s cost could exceed $900 million USD, including related maintenance costs, prosecution fees and litigation costs.
