Helios MPEG-DASH patent challenged

On December 14, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,362,130, owned and asserted by Helios Streaming LLC, an NPE and entity of Ideahub, Inc. The ‘130 patent is relevant to systems that are compliant with the MPEG-DASH standard; its claims are directed to providing adaptive HTTP streaming services using metadata of media content to ensure smooth playback. It has been asserted against Crackle, Starz, Showtime, Vudu, Fandango, Warner Brothers, and HBO.

IPVal entity, 5G IP Holdings, 5G patent reexam granted

On November 14, 2023, three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,813,163, owned and asserted by 5G IP Holdings LLC, an NPE and IP Valuation Partners, LLC entity. The '163 patent generally relates to discontinuous reception (DRX) and utilizing slots within subframes to adapt DRX to function within the 5G frame structure. The patent is currently being asserted against Apple and had previously been asserted against Samsung.

Empire IP entity, Fleet Connect, wireless patent challenged

On September 22, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,058,040, owned and asserted by Fleet Connect Solutions, LLC, an NPE and entity of Empire IP. The ‘040 patent generally relates to minimizing RF channel interference in a device where two RF standards operate in the same frequency bands. The patent is being asserted against devices that have the ability to communicate using LTE, 802.11, or Bluetooth. Companies asserted against include Penske Auto, Aptiv, USIC Locating Services, Rivian, and Peloton.

Interdigital 3GPP patent revoked by EPO

On May 12, 2023, the European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3497866. Owned by InterDigital, the EP’866 patent relates to wireless transmission methods for supporting multiple numerology blocks or bandwidth parts on a carrier signal, which is related to 5G wireless technology. This was the first EPO filing within Unified’s 3GPP Zone.

Optis Wireless 4G/LTE patent reexam granted

On April 13, 2023, six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,137,830, owned and asserted by Optis Wireless Technology, LLC, an NPE and Brevet Capital entity. The ‘830 patent is generally directed to reducing collision while reporting control information in radio communications between a mobile station (i.e., any user equipment capable of performing radio transmission) and a base station. This filing is a part of Unified’s 3GPP Zone.
