On November 14, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 5,978,951, owned and asserted by Plectrum LLC, an NPE. The '951 Patent, directed to providing a network address cache, was previously asserted in district court litigation against such companies as Nokia, Oracle, AT&T, Verizon, Broadcom, Huawei, and Juniper Networks.
