Malikie MPEG-DASH related patent challenge instituted

On August 25, 2025, less than one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,392,598, owned and asserted by Malikie Innovations Limited, an NPE and entity of Key Patent Innovations Limited. The '598 patent is generally directed to streaming media content to user devices, and allowing the user devices to control the format of the media downloaded based on conditions such as available bandwidth. Although not declared to any video codec standard, this patent is relevant to MPEG-DASH.

New saving capabilities added to Unified's Portal

Unified’s Portal has added a new component to its Patent Search page called MY SEARCHES. This new feature allows users to save their searches and have easy access when different analysis is performed.

Once a user is logged in, a collapsible panel will appear in the side toolbar of the Patent Search page. The panel will show ‘No queries found’ if there are no saved searches. Adjust the filters and perform a search. Click on ‘Save Search’.

The user then can name the search and click on OK. The search will be saved to ‘My Searches’ and can be seen from the drop-down menu. To remove, hover over the name and click on the ‘X’. Portal will double check if the user wants to delete or not.

DynaIP entity WirelessWerx IP geofencing patent challenge instituted

On August 25, 2025, one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,323,982, owned by WirelessWerx IP LLC, an NPE and Dynamic IP Deals LLC entity. The ‘982 patent directed to tracking and managing wireless devices using geofencing techniques. It is currently asserted against Verizon, Zebra Technologies, Audi, Tesla, Hyundai, among others.

Nchain blockchain patent challenge instituted

On August 19, 2025, four weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 12,032,677, owned by Nchain Holdings Limited, an NPE. The ‘677 patent generally relates to consensus-based electronic ledgers, and in particular to blockchain implementations and technologies.

Two Xylene video codec patents (in Sisvel's and Access Advance's pools) revocations confirmed in Japan

The Japan Intellectual Property High Court has affirmed the revocations of two patents, JP6768017 and JP6768110, owned by Xylene. The two patents are related to patents purportedly essential to HEVC Advance patent pool and SISVEL’s VP9 and AV1 patent pools.
