First post-referral IP Edge entity Communication Advances camera patent challenged

On February 23, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,823,826, owned by Communication Advances LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Edge. The ‘826 patent is being asserted against GM in one of IP Edge’s first litigation campaigns after three of the lawyers associated with the NPE were referred for discipline by Delaware Chief Judge Connolly for violating professional conduct rules.

The ‘826 patent is directed to digital cameras and image processing methods for digital cameras where an application is triggered when the subject’s eye-gazing direction meets an eye-gazing criterion. It has been asserted against GM.

Datanet file backup patent found invalid

On February 23, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,473,478, owned and asserted by Datanet, LLC. The ‘478 patent is directed to an automatic real-time file management method and apparatus. The patent is currently being asserted against Microsoft and Dropbox.

Magnetar Capital entity Lionra cybersecurity patent challenge instituted

On February 22, 2024, less than five weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,264,441, owned by Lionra Technologies Ltd, a Magnetar Capital entity. The ‘441 patent relates to detecting vulnerability exploits of a network using a virtual machine and has been asserted against Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, Crowdstrike, VMware, and Cisco.

$2,000 for Jeffrey M. Gross entity Webcon Vectors telecommunications patent prior art

Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 10,681,218, owned by Webcon Vectors LLC, an NPE and entity of Jeffrey M. Gross. The ‘218 patent generally relates to vastly improved telecommunication methods for a plurality of users for one to one communication or in a conference environment where a number of users are required. The patent has been asserted against Cisco, Microsoft, Lifesize, and GoTo Technologies.

On February 22, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,586,871, owned by OptiMorphix, Inc. The ‘871 patent relates to providing services in a data communications system. It has been asserted against Amazon, Broadcom, Cisco, F5, Google, Microsoft, Oracle, and VMware.
