$4,000 for Dynamic IP Deals entity Silent Communications '409 & '874 prior art

Unified Patents added two separate PATROLL contests with an opportunity to collect up to $4,000 in cash for prior art on at least claim 1 of two patents - U.S. Patent 8,229,409 and U.S. Patent 8,792,874. The patents are owned by Silent Communications LLC, an NPE and Dynamic IP Deals entity. The ‘409 patent generally relates to allowing a calling party to make a called party be aware of its intention to establish a call session with it in one or more ways and has been asserted against Adobe, Lifesize, and Fuze. The '874 patent generally relates to providing messaging services which may provide for download, synchronization, voicemail-message to text-message translation, direct access and handling of selected voicemail messages through a user's user interface and is currently being asserted against Blackberry.

Dynamic IP Deals entity AK Meeting IP patent challenged

On June 22, 2022, Unified Patents filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 10,963,124, owned and asserted by AK Meeting IP LLC, an NPE and Dynamic IP Deals entity. The ‘124 patent relates to computer-supported cooperative work software, also known as groupware, and has been asserted in seven district court actions, including current actions against Adobe, Cisco Systems, Fuze, Lifesize, and Zoho Corp.

ETRI patent successfully challenged

On June 17, 2022, the USPTO issued a final rejection of all challenged claims at issue of U.S. Patent 10,244,252, owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This rejection comes less than a year after Unified filed the request for ex parte reexamination in October 2021. The ‘252 patent is part of the HEVC Advance Patent Pool, as well as SISVEL's AV1 patent pool. This reexamination was filed as part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

Magnetar entity Arigna patent likely invalid

On June 17, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 7,049,850, owned by Arigna Technology Limited, a Magnetar Capital subsidiary. Formerly owned by Mitsubishi Electric Corp., the ‘850 patent is generally related to a high voltage integrated circuit. The patent has been asserted against BMW, Honda, Nissan, GM, Volkswagen, Daimler, and Mercedes-Benz.

Unified Patents is again growing its legal department and seeks to add an experienced, registered patent attorney. Applicants should have at least 5 years of law firm or other relevant experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) working on post-grant petitions (IPR, PGR, and CBM), reexaminations, or other administrative drafting and litigation experience.

Applicants should have a strong technical background and be willing to explore diverse new technologies; experience with video codecs, coding, cryptography, compression, signals, wireless communications, or other algorithmic subject matter is a plus. Patent examination experience is a plus; a registration number is a plus; clerking experience is a plus; familiarity with ongoing appellate issues affecting PTAB practice is a plus. Must be willing to work within a team, work well independently, and enjoy writing and editing. Journal and filing experience is a plus. Strong preference for candidates located in the Washington, DC area. Diversity is prized in our team and among our candidates.
