MobilePay final decision affirmed by Federal Circuit

On March 11, 2022, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit summarily affirmed the PTAB’s ruling that all challenged claims of MobilePay’s U.S. Patent 9,800,706 are unpatentable. MobilePay is an IP Valuation Partners subsidiary.

The '706 patent is directed to systems that connect a credit card reader to a mobile phone via the audio port so the mobile phone can be used to transmit credit card data to a cloud service for decoding. The patent has been asserted against PayPal, Bank of America, Mindbody, and Intuit.

$2,000 for BNP Holdings prior art

Unified Patents has added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 6,374,229, owned by BNP Holdings, an NPE. The '229 patent generally relates to web-based accounting and financial software. It is currently being asserted against Intuit.

On March 7, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,862,508, owned and asserted by mCom IP, LLC, a Dynamic IP Deals entity. The '508 patent is directed to using e-banking touchpoints to provide personalized financial services and has been asserted 24 times against various banks and financial services companies, including Wells Fargo, US Bank, PNC, IBM, and NCR Corp.

The patent is owned by Wapp Tech Corp., an NPE. The '811 patent generally relates to a system and methods to emulate an application executing in real time on a mobile device. The '811 patent has been asserted against Wells Fargo and Bank of America.

The '868 patent is related to cloud and data-storage technology and was asserted against Dropbox.
