B# On Demand patent held invalid

On November 10, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. B# On Demand, LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,553,880 invalid. Owned and asserted by B# On Demand, LLC, an NPE, the ’880 patent discloses a system that transmits a catalog of electronic files to a requesting user, sets up customer accounts, processes payments from customers to establish file access authorizations, and enables transmission of user-selected files to customers. It had been asserted against Spotify.

Longhorn HD patent held invalid

On November 9, 2021, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Longhorn HD LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,260,846 invalid. Longhorn HD LLC, an NPE, is an affiliate of Alpha Alpha Intellectual Partners, LLC. The ’846 patent was previously owned by Intellectual Ventures and is directed to cybersecurity techniques including detecting malicious network behavior. It had been asserted against Fortinet, Juniper Networks, and Check Point, but new assertions include NetScout Systems, Mitel Software, and Trend Micro.

GEVC EPO Patent Challenged

On September 30, 2021, Unified filed an opposition proceeding against EP 3151566 B1, currently owned by GE Video Compression, LLC. The EP ’566 patent is part of a family purportedly essential to HEVC and part of the Access Advance patent pool. This filing is a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

Second InterDigital EPO Patent Challenged

On October 26, 2021, Unified filed an opposition proceeding against another patent owned by InterDigital, EP 1872588 B1. The EP ’588 patent is part of a family purportedly essential to HEVC and part of the Access Advance patent pool. This filing is a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

Proven Networks Patent Invalidated in Reexam

On November 3, 2021, the USPTO filed a notice of intent to cancel claims 1-18 of U.S. Patent 8,018,852, owned by Proven Networks, LLC. The ‘852 patent relates to a port selection technique used in a network switching environment where there are multiple equal-cost paths between two nodes. The ‘852 patent has been asserted against Palo Alto Networks, Dell, Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon, HPE, NetApp, Arista, F5, and Extreme Networks.
