$3,000 for Trust & Verify Data Protection Prior Art

On October 8, 2020, Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $3,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on all of the limitations of dependent Claim 10 and including all of the limitations of independent Claim 4 of U.S. Patent 7,162,735. The patent is owned by Trust & Verify Data Protection, LLC, an NPE. The '735 patent generally relates to an arrangement with a protected code that comprises incomplete executable code and a call instruction to a security code such that when the security code is executed, it replaces the call instruction such that the executable code of the protected code is complete.

The ‘735 patent is currently being asserted against Best Buy, McAfee, Electronic Arts, Aspyr Media, Vimeo, Buzzfeed, and King.com.

Optima Direct patent determined to be likely invalid

On October 5, 2020, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,646,060, owned and asserted by Optima Direct, LLC, an NPE and 2S Ventures affiliate. The ’060 patent, generally directed to adaptive authentication methods using a mobile device, has been asserted in district court cases against HID Global Corporation, OneLogin, Ping Identity and Okta.

Karetek Holdings patent challenged as likely invalid

On October 1, 2020, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,373,515, owned by Karetek Holdings LLC, an NPE and an IP Edge entity. The ‘515 patent is generally directed to a method of multi-factor authentication. Karetek has asserted the ‘515 patent against RetailMeNot, Golds Gym, HelloFresh, PetSmart, Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, and others.

Acacia entity, Monarch Networking Solutions, patent challenged as likely invalid

On October 1, 2020, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,756,507, owned by Monarch Networking Solutions LLC, an NPE and an Acacia Research entity. The ‘507 patent is generally directed to device-based dual-factor authentication using one-time passwords. The ‘507 patent is currently being asserted against Cisco, Meraki, and Duo Security.

On October 1, 2020, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 9,449,484, owned by Richman Technology Corp, an NPE. The ’484 patent is generally related to security hardware and real-time security monitoring software systems . The ‘484 patent has been asserted against security system makers such as ADT, Assa Abloy, Skylink Technologies, Google, and others.
