SoftVault LLC settles IPR with Unified Patents

On June 28, 2017, SoftVault Systems, Inc. and Unified Patents Inc. jointly filed a request to terminate IPR2017-01788 pursuant to settlement. U.S. Patent 6,249,868, the subject of the IPR petition, relates to protecting and controlling personal computers and/or components of those computers.

MONKEYmedia patent challenged as likely invalid

On October 13, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 9,247,226 owned and asserted by MONKEYmedia, Inc., an NPE. The '226 patent, directed to method and storage device for expanding and contracting continuous play media seamlessly, was first asserted in district court litigation on May 31, 2017 against Samsung

Kamatani Cloud patent determined to be likely invalid

On October 10, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 6,873,940, owned and asserted by Kamatani Cloud, a subsidiary of General Patent Corporation, a well-known NPE.  The '940 Patent, directed to a measurement service system "for carrying out remote measurements or telemetry," was previously asserted in district court litigation against Animetrics, Inc.

Vilox Technologies patent challenged as likely invalid

On October 6, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,302,423 owned and asserted by Vilox Technologies LLC, an NPE. The '423 patent, directed to systems providing a user interface for database access, has previously been asserted in several district court cases against such companies as Express, The Priceline Group, Walmart, Neiman Marcus and Rakuten.

Fall Line patent challenged as likely invalid

On October 6, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 9,454,748 owned and asserted by Fall Line Patents, LLC, an NPE. The '748 patent, directed to collecting data from a remote computing device by delivering a questionnaire and transmitting responses to a server via a network, has been asserted in five district court cases in in 2017, four of which are currently pending against Cinemark, American Airlines, Uber and Choice Hotels International
