Wordlogic patent challenged as likely invalid

On July 28, 2017, Unified, represented by Erise IP, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,681,124 owned and asserted by 602531 British Columbia Ltd., a subsidiary of Wordlogic Corporation, an NPE. The '124 patent, directed to a data entry system for personal computing devices, has been asserted in multiple district court cases against Touchtype (developer of the Swiftkey keyboard system used in many iOS and Android devices), Chicago Logic, and Flesky (a subsidiary of Pinterest).

Velocity Patent LLC patent challenged as likely invalid

On July 26, 2017, Unified, represented by Fish & Richardson, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 5,954,781 owned and asserted by Velocity Patent LLC, an NPE. The '781 patent, directed to an apparatus for optimizing an engine-driven vehicle, has been asserted in multiple district court cases against companies such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Chrysler, and Jaguar Land Rover.

Uniloc patent challenged as likely invalid

On July 25, 2017, Unified, represented by Haynes and Boone, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 8,838,976 owned and asserted by Uniloc Luxembourg, S.A., a subsidiary of Uniloc Corporation Pty. Limited, a well-known NPE. Uniloc was responsible for filing 87 patent infringement actions against 73 operating companies in 2016 and has since filed an additional 51 new cases in 2017. The '976 patent, directed to a system for authenticating the identity of website users, was first asserted in April 2017 in an infringement action against Apple.

SoftVault Systems patent challenged as likely invalid

On July 17, 2017, Unified, represented by McDermott Will & Emery, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 6,249,868 owned and asserted by SoftVault Systems Inc., a well-known NPE. The '868 patent, directed to protecting and controlling personal computers and/or components of those computers, has been asserted in multiple district court cases against companies such as AVG Technologies, Adobe, Oracle, and Samsung

Unified has challenged almost all of 2017’s most prolific NPEs

Unified Patents has challenged 9 of RPX's 2017 “Top 10” most prolific Non-Practicing Entities

Unified has independently challenged at least 1 patent owned by 9 of the top 10 entities.  (Unified filings) Studies have found, consistent with Unified's experience and research, that prolific plaintiffs are very often NPEs asserting lower quality patents.  RPX, another 3rd party, has independently challenged 3 of the top 10. Unified’s model is never to pay NPEs any money and challenge patents it believes are invalid.

This has led to a decrease in NPE activity and purchasing in the areas Unified protects.  And Unified did not pay any NPEs---paying incentivizes further invalid assertions.  Unified has filed more IPRs and had more successes than all other 3rd party entities combined.   You can see a comparison here:
