Reexamination

Two more Wilus Wi-Fi patents challenged

On January 30, 2026, Unified filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 12,166,587, owned by Wilus Institute of Standards & Technology, Inc., an entity of Good Day to Invent, Inc. The ‘587 patent generally related to how to identify padding in Wi-Fi trigger frames. The '587 patent has not been asserted itself, but it is the latest issued patent in a family being used in litigation.

On February 3, 2026, Unified filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 11,284,475, also owned by Wilus. The ‘475 patent is generally related to setting a Basic Service Set (BSS) color in a responsive Wi-Fi Physical Layer Protocol Data Units (PPDU) when a received PPDU does or does not include a trigger frame that indicates the BSS color. The '475 patent has not been asserted, but it is related to patents being used in litigation.

Second Atlas Global Wi-Fi patent challenged

On January 21, 2026, Unified filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,965,425, owned and asserted by Atlas Global Technologies, LLC, an NPE and Acacia Research entity. The ‘425 patent is generally directed to allocating and signalling the allocation of a special center 26-tone resource unit when employing 80 MHz or higher bandwidths in OFDMA wireless communications. The patent is currently being asserted against HPE, accusing access points that support Wi-Fi 6.

Ascend Innovations entity, Byteweavr, cloud data patent found invalid

On December 30, 2025, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a notice of intent to issue a reexamination certificate cancelling most of the claims of U.S. Patent 6,862,488, owned and asserted by Byteweavr, LLC, an NPE and Ascend Innovations entity. The ‘488 patent relates to automated validation and workflow management. It had been asserted against Databricks and Cloudera.

Another Wilus Wi-Fi patent challenge instituted

On December 29, 2025, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims (1-6, 12-17) of U.S. Patent 10,567,047, owned and asserted by Wilus Institute of Standards & Technology, Inc., an entity of Good Day to Invent, Inc. The '047 patent is generally directed to Wi-Fi 6 devices configured to information in the HE-SIG-A field of an HE MU PPDU to understand the configuration of the HE-SIG-B field when using full bandwidth MU-MIMO. This challenge is part of Unified’s Wi-Fi zone and was the fourth reexamination filing against Wilus this year.

Another International Semiconductor Group Wi-Fi 6 patent challenge instituted

On December 19, 2025, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claim of U.S. Patent 11,363,595, owned by the International Semiconductor Group, an NPE. The '595 patent is generally directed to transmitting a first frame on a first channel that identifies a second channel that can be used, and then receiving frames via both channels. This is particularly relevant to Wi-Fi devices that can operate in two frequency channels or bands, i.e., the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
