Biogy authentication patent challenge instituted

On May 28, 2025, three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,669,236, owned and asserted by Biogy, Inc., an NPE. The ‘236 patent is directed to the generation and authentication of a one-time passcode in a multi-factor authentication system. It had been asserted against Alberstons Companies, and Microsoft and Okta recently filed DJs of noninfringement against Biogy.

K.Mizra network patent challenged

On May 15, 2025, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,782,282, owned and asserted by K.Mizra LLC. The ‘282 patent relates to communications in a network management system. K.Mizra, an apparently funded entity that has brought suit on at least 35 patents worldwide, has asserted the ‘282 patent against Ciena Corporation.

Fraud Free Transactions secure transactions patent challenge instituted

On April 24, 2025, six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 11,551,215, owned and asserted by Fraud Free Transactions, LLC. The ‘215 patent relates to fraud deterrence for secure transactions. It has been asserted against Okta and Ping Identity Corporation.

Empire IP entity, IOT Innovations, IOT controller patent challenge instituted

On June 5, 2025, less than three weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,085,796, owned and asserted by IOT Innovations, LLC, an NPE and Empire IP entity. The ‘796 patent relates to controlling communications with a user's various communication devices. It has been asserted against IOT systems, such as in Fibar Group, Snap One, and Savant Systems.

On May 30, 2025, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,181,042, owned by Polaris PowerLED Technologies, LLC, an NPE. The ‘042 patent generally relates to power management in integrated circuits.
