DynaIP entity, Silent Communication, telecom patent claim cancelled

On September 25, 2023, the USPTO issued a Notice of Intent to Issue Ex Parte Reexamination Certificate in RE90/015,109, cancelling the lone claim of U.S. Patent 8,229,409, owned by Silent Communication, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity. The ’409 patent relates to recovering calls after an erroneous disconnection and has been asserted against Adobe, Fuze, Lifesize, and Zoho. Unified filed the request for ex parte reexamination in August 2022.

Aeritas mobile notification patent claims cancelled

On September 19, 2023, the USPTO issued a Notice of Intent to Issue Ex Parte Reexamination Certificate in RE90/014,750, cancelling all claims of U.S. Patent 9,390,435, owned by Aeritas, LLC. Prior to this notice issuing, Aeritas had appealed the Examiner’s final rejection to the Board and lost. Unified filed the request for ex parte reexamination in May 2021.

The ‘435 patent relates to receiving notifications related to products or services of interest, at a mobile device based on the location of the mobile device and notification criteria, and then receiving additional information about the products or services or a purchase confirmation, at the mobile device in response to an input. The patent had been asserted in 21 litigations.

Dolby EP patent successfully challenged at the EPO

On September 14, 2023, all of the original claims of EP 3490258 B1, owned by Dolby International AB, were found unpatentable based on a challenge filed by Unified. EP ‘258 generally relates to video coding techniques that use data hiding to decrease bandwidth. This filing is a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.

Fortress entity, Entropic, broadcast cable patent challenged

On September 20, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,210,362, owned and asserted by Entropic Communications, an NPE and Fortress IP subsidiary. The ’362 Patent generally relates to a wideband receiver that outputs a selected plurality of television channels to a demodulator. The patent is currently being asserted against Cox, Comcast, and Charter Communications.

The '249 patent generally relates to communication between devices in a local area network utilizing coaxial wiring. The patent is currently being asserted against DirecTV / AT&T, Cox, Comcast, and Dish Network.
