Better Browsing web browser patent reexam granted

On July 17, 2023, two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,838,736, owned and asserted by Better Browsing LLC. The '736 patent relates generally to a zoom feature for an internet browser and has been asserted against Samsung, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, and Opera Norway AS.

Causam Enterprises power management patent held invalid

On July 18, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Causam Enterprises Inc. holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,396,592 unpatentable. The ‘592 patent is owned by Causam Enterprises, Inc., an NPE. The ’592 patent relates to active load management systems and has been asserted in district court and the ITC against Ecobee, Resideo, Alarm.com, Xylem, and Itron.

Vision Works IP automotive patent challenged

On July 14, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,437,935, owned and asserted by Vision Works IP Corp., an NPE. The ’935 patent generally relates to a vehicle monitoring system for turning off an idling engine. The ’935 patent is currently being asserted against Nissan and was previously asserted against Mercedes-Benz USA.

GEVC video codec Japanese patent opposition successful

On March 30, 2023, the Japanese Patent Office found that the original claims of JP6909818 were obvious in view of the known art. The JP '818 patent is owned by GE Video Compression LLC (GEVC). The JP '818 patent is related to patents that have been designated as essential to the Access Advance patent pool and SISVEL’s AV1 and VP9 pools.

KAIST & ETRI AV1/HEVC Japanese patent opposition successful

On March 14, 2022, the Japanese Patent Office found that the original claims of JP6855419 were obvious in view of the known art. The JP '419 is owned by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The JP‘419 patent is related to patents that have been designated essential in both the Access Advance and AV1 pools.
