Velos Media video codec patent challenged in reexam

On May 26, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,390,013, owned by Velos Media, an NPE. The '013 patent generally relates to encoding syntax elements that indicate tile information into a slice header.

Datanet file backup patent reexam granted

On May 24, 2023, just under two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,473,478, owned and asserted by Datanet, LLC. The ‘478 patent is directed to an automatic real-time file management method and apparatus. The patent is currently being asserted against Microsoft and Dropbox.

Traxcell navigation patent reexam granted

On May 22, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,820,147, owned and asserted by Traxcell Technologies, LLC, an NPE. The ‘147 patent is generally directed to providing navigation information to a wireless mobile communications device while also allowing the user to set preference flags to prevent tracking of the wireless mobile communications device. Traxcell has asserted the ‘147 patent in 23 cases against companies such as Google, DoorDash, Uber, T-Mobile, and others.

Mel NavIP automobile speech recognition patent likely invalid

On May 23, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,060,368, owned and asserted by Mel NavIP, LLC. The '368 patent is generally directed to navigation and speech recognition for a vehicle. The patent had been asserted against Toyota and is currently asserted against GM and Hyundai.

GEVC video codec patent revoked by EPO

On May 23, 2023, the European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3151566 B1, owned by GE Video Compression, LLC. The EP ’566 patent is part of a family purportedly essential to HEVC and part of the Access Advance patent pool. This filing is a part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.
