ETRI video codec patent challenged in reexam

On April 7, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 10,341,661, owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The ’661 patent has been designated in the Access Advance patent pool, and it is related to patents designated essential in Sisvel’s AV1 and VP9 patent pools.

Engle Grange's key fob patent affirmed invalid by Federal Circuit

On April 4, 2023, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Office's final decision, in a summary Rule 36 affirmance, confirmed that U.S. Patent 8,548,645, owned by Engle Grange, LLC, was unpatentable. The ‘645 patent, generally directed towards a two-step key fob authentication system for an automobile, had been asserted in district court litigation against Ford in early 2020.

Datanet file backup patent challenged

On April 3, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,473,478, owned and asserted by Datanet, LLC. The ‘478 patent is directed to an automatic real-time file management method and apparatus. The patent is currently being asserted against Microsoft and Dropbox.

IPVal entity Rosen Technologies thermostat patent likely invalid

On March 23, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 7,156,318, owned and asserted by Rosen Technologies LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Valuation Partners. The ‘318 patent is directed to a programmable thermostat having virtual buttons that control space conditioning equipment and has been asserted against Resideo Technologies and Lennox International.

Dominion Harbor entity Liberty Peak Ventures RFID patent held invalid

On March 23, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Liberty Peak Ventures LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,066,181 unpatentable. Owned and asserted by Liberty Peak Ventures, LLC, a Dominion Harbor entity, the '181 patent relates to generating an authentication tag for use in contactless transactions and had been asserted against Citigroup.
