Hilco Global entity Bell Semiconductor integrated circuit patent reexam granted

On February 17, 2023, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 7,007,259, owned and asserted by Bell Semiconductor LLC, an NPE and entity of Hilco Global. The ‘259 patent relates to a method of prioritizing dummy fill in a semiconductor chip. The patent has been asserted in over 25 litigations against semiconductor companies like NXP, AMD, Micron, Qualcomm, Infineon, Western Digital, Lattice Semiconductor, and others.

Tanit Ventures entity L2 Mobile Tech wireless patent reexam granted

On February 17, 2023, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims (claims 1-10) of U.S. Patent 8,321,740, owned and asserted by L2 Mobile Technologies LLC, an NPE and entity of Tanit Ventures Inc. The ’740 patent is generally directed to Transmission Time Interval (TTI) bundling in user equipment of a wireless communication system. This reexamination was filed as part of Unified’s 3GPP SEP zone.

CommWorks cellular patent held invalid

On February 13, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Commworks Solutions, LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,923,846 unpatentable. Owned by CommWorks Solutions, LLC, an NPE and subsidiary of IP Investments Group LLC, the ‘846 patent relates to the recovery of information in a mobile communications network. It had been asserted against Comcast Cable Communications.

Ideahub final decision affirmed by Federal Circuit

On February 10, 2023, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit summarily affirmed the PTAB’s ruling that all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,641,849 are unpatentable. Owned by Ideahub Inc., the IPR was filed as part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone. The '849 patent relates to a video compression technique known as intra prediction and Access Advance claims that certain claims of the '849 patent were essential to the HEVC standard.

This appeal comes from a Final Written Decision (IPR2020-00702) invalidating U.S. Patent 9,641,849 and denying a motion to amend the claims based on a lack of written description support. The decision is a nonprecedential written opinion.

Dynamic IP Deals entity MCOM IP financial services patent held invalid

On February 8, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. MCOM IP, LLC holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,862,508 unpatentable. Owned and asserted by mCom IP, LLC, a Dynamic IP Deals entity, the '508 patent is directed to using e-banking touchpoints to provide personalized financial services. The patent had been asserted over 40 times against various banks and financial services companies, including Wells Fargo, US Bank, PNC, IBM, and NCR Corp.
