IP Edge entity, Noblewood IP, settles with Unified

On December 19, 2022, the Board issued an order terminating IPR2022-01111 pursuant to a joint settlement request filed by Unified Patents and Noblewood IP LLC, an NPE and IP Edge entity. U.S. Patent 7,941,553 relates to responding to user requests for multimedia content with a metafile. This patent has been asserted twelve times this year, including against Wolters Kluwer, Viacom, and Everyday Health.

Two ETRI European Video Codec patents held invalid

The European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3448035 and EP 3448036, both owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). EP’035 and EP’036 relate to determining whether, when decoding, to apply filters to intra-prediction values based on the intra-prediction mode and the size of the block being decoded. The patents are part of a large family with related patents designated as essential to the H.265 and AV1 standards by Access Advance and SISVEL, respectively.

Topia Technology file sharing patent likely invalid

On November 17, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 10,067,942, owned by Topia Technology, Inc., an NPE. The ‘942 patent relates to automatic file sharing across a distributed network. It has been asserted against Box, Dropbox, and Egnyte, among other co-defendants.

SoundStreak Texas A/V recording patent reexam granted

On December 2, 2022, just one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 10,726,822, owned and asserted by SoundStreak Texas LLC, an NPE and entity of Quest Patent Research Corporation. The ’822 patent is directed to simultaneously establishing high- and low- quality data formats for streaming and storing digital content during a live event. The patent is currently being asserted against Fujifilm Holdings.

LBT IP II location monitoring patent likely invalid

On December 7, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,531,289, owned and asserted by LBT IP II LLC. The '289 patent is directed to location monitoring systems and has been asserted against Uber.
