Flexiworld wireless communications patent likely invalid

On November 8, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,836,257, owned by Flexiworld Technologies, Inc., an NPE. The ’257 patent relates to transmitting digital content from a mobile apparatus to a wireless output device and has been asserted against Roku.

Dominion Harbor entity, Sovereign Peak Ventures, data transmissions patent held invalid

On November 8, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) issued a final written decision in Unified Patents, LLC v. Sovereign Peak Ventures holding all challenged claims of U.S. Patent 6,877,038 unpatentable. Owned by Dominion Harbor’s entity, Sovereign Peak Ventures, the '038 patent is directed to transmitting and receiving video data arranged in data frames forming a data stream. It has been asserted against HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology from TCL, Hisense, and LG. The petition was filed as part of Unified’s ongoing efforts in the SEP Video Codec Zone.

DynaIP entity, Silent Communication, telecom patent reexam granted

On October 21, 2022, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,229,409, owned by Silent Communication, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity. The ’409 patent relates to recovering calls after an erroneous disconnection and has been asserted against Adobe, Fuze, and Lifesize.

Route Guidance Systems vehicle guidance patent reexam granted

On October 19, 2022, less than six weeks after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 6,917,876, owned by Route Guidance Systems LLC, an NPE. The ’876 patent is directed to route guidance systems for vehicles where the calculated route is transmitted from a central computer to a vehicle over a channel of communication in a short burst and is then closed, so that transmission to the vehicle ceases, unless and until a need for further transmission arises. The patent is currently being asserted against ExxonMobil, Verizon, MyPizza Technologies, Honda, Salesforce, Grubhub, HERE Global, DoorDash, MapleBear, and Waitr.

Mel NavIP speech recognition patent challenged

On October 24, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 8,060,368, owned and asserted by Mel NavIP, LLC. The '368 patent is generally directed to a speech recognition apparatus and is being asserted against Toyota.
