Virtual Creative Artist patent challenged

On August 11, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 10,339,576, owned and asserted by Virtual Creative Artist, LLC. The '576 patent is directed towards a process for creating and publishing media content on an electronic exchange. The patent is currently being asserted against Meta.

Intellectual Ventures patent likely invalid

On August 11, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,291,475, owned by Intellectual Ventures II LLC. The ’475 patent relates to alerting a recipient regarding a violation of a vehicle, such as a speeding violation, and has been asserted in district court against Toyota, GM, and Honda.

Valtrus Innovations patent challenged

On August 10, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,748,005, owned and asserted by Valtrus Innovations Ltd., an entity of Key Patent Innovations Limited. The ‘005 patent is generally related to allocating resources between several computing domains. It has been asserted against Google.

ETRI patent challenged in the EPO

On August 8, 2022, Unified filed an opposition proceeding against EP 3767952, owned by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The EP’952 patent relates to an apparatus for encoding image data and an apparatus for decoding image data, where the encoding/decoding makes use of motion vector coding for image compression, particularly an inter prediction method.

EP’952 is related to patents that have been designated essential to HEVCA and has also been identified as potentially essential to the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard.

IP Valuation entity Lupercal reexam granted

On July 27, 2022, less than two months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 9,386,094, owned and asserted by Lupercal, LLC, an NPE and IP Valuation Partners entity. The '094 patent is generally directed to an image submission tool that can pre-process images prior to image upload based on pre-processing parameters received from a separate device and has previously been asserted against Ally Financial and BancorpSouth Bank.
