Speir Technologies patent challenged

On May 27, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,321,777, owned and asserted by Speir Technologies Ltd., an NPE and Magnetar Capital entity. The ’777 patent relates to using a wireless device to locate a remote wireless device and has been asserted against Samsung and Apple.

Mirror Imaging patent likely invalid

On May 26, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,928,275, owned by Mirror Imaging, LLC, an NPE. The ‘275 patent is generally related to financial document retrieval and storage systems and has been asserted against Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Capital One, PNC Bank, BancorpSouth Bank, and others.

Equitable IP's Optic153 adverse judgment granted

On May 23, 2022, the PTAB entered adverse judgment with respect to claims 1, 16, 19, 21, and 22 (all challenged claims) of U.S. Patent 6,115,174, owned by Optic153 LLC, an Equitable IP entity, in IPR2021-00932 filed by Unified Patents. After the PTAB instituted trial, Optic153 filed a statutory disclaimer with the USPTO disclaiming the challenged claims. The PTAB treated Optic153's disclaimer as a request for adverse judgment as to the challenged claims and granted the request.

The '174 patent is generally related to devices that vary optical signals and had been previously asserted against Comcast, Verizon, T-Mobile, Windstream Holdings, Dish Network, Charter Communications, Crown Castle International Corp., and AT&T.

K. Mizra patent likely invalid

On May 18, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 7,394,423, owned and asserted by K. Mizra LLC. The ‘423 patent generally relates to a device for initiating and handling an emergency IP request using an IP enabled device having GPS capability and had been asserted against General Motors.

Jeffrey M. Gross entity Compression Vectors reexamination granted

On May 16, 2022, just one month after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the USPTO granted Unified’s request, finding substantial new questions of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 6,731,813. The patent is owned and asserted by Compression Vectors LLC, an NPE and entity of Jeffrey M. Gross. The '813 patent relates to adjusting frame intervals during compression of a video signal and was previously asserted against Axis Communications AB, Cisco, Hanwha Corp., and Intel. This filing is part of Unified's ongoing efforts in its SEP Video Codec Zone.
