IP Edge entity Invincible IP's patent likely invalid

On April 15, 2022, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,678,774, owned and asserted by Invincible IP LLC, an IP Edge entity. The '774 patent relates to allowing or denying migration of virtual machines based on the geographic location of the target host. It has been asserted against Citrix Systems, Nutanix, Alibaba Cloud US, DigitalOcean, NetApp, and Skytap in the District of Delaware.

Topia Technology patent challenged

On April 15, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 10,067,942, owned by Topia Technology, Inc., an NPE. The ‘942 patent relates to automatic file sharing across a distributed network. It has been asserted against Box, Dropbox, and Egnyte.

Flexiworld patent challenged

On April 8, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 9,836,257, owned by Flexiworld Technologies, Inc., an NPE. The ’257 patent relates to transmitting digital content from a mobile apparatus to a wireless output device and has been asserted against Roku.

Aeritas patent successfully challenged

On April 4, 2022, the USPTO issued a final rejection of all challenged claims at issue of U.S. Patent 9,390,435, owned by Aeritas LLC, an NPE. This rejection comes less than a year after Unified filed the request for ex parte reexamination in May 2021. The ‘435 patent relates to receiving notifications related to products or services of interest, at a mobile device based on the location of the mobile device and notification criteria, and then receiving additional information about the products or services or a purchase confirmation, at the mobile device in response to an input. The patent has been asserted in 21 litigations, including current assertions against Finnair Oyi and WestJet Airlines.

Velos EP patent successfully challenged

On February 8, 2022, all of the original claims of EP 3 113 493 B1, owned by Velos Media, LLC, were found unpatentable. The ‘493 patent is generally related to decoding image data to generate quantized transform coefficients using certain sized matrices. This was one of Unified’s first filings in the EPO and was a part of its ongoing efforts in the SEP Video Codec Zone.
