Acacia entity, Monarch, networking patent challenge instituted

On December 5, 2023, three months after Unified filed an ex parte reexamination, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) granted Unified’s request, finding a substantial new question of patentability on the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,451,845, owned and asserted by Monarch Networking Solutions, LLC, an Acacia Research Corp. entity.  The ‘845 patent relates to converting data packets between the IPv4 and IPv6 domains. It has been asserted against Cisco and Juniper Networks.

IP Investments entity, Distributed Media, media streaming patent challenged

On December 5, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,739,714, owned and asserted by Distributed Media Solutions, an NPE and entity of IP Investments Group. The ‘714 patent relates to methods and systems for encoding digital multimedia data for transmission over a network. The patent has been asserted against AMC Networks, CuriosityStream, and Fenix International.

Fortress IP entity Entropic Communications cable packet transmission patent found invalid in reexam

On November 22, 2023, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the challenged claims of U.S. Patent 8,228,910, owned by Entropic Communications, LLC, an NPE and a Fortress IP entity. The '910 patent relates to aggregating packets for transmission to a destination node and has been asserted against Comcast, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, and Dish.

Dolby VVC patent revoked in EPO

On November 30, 2023, the European Patent Office revoked all claims of EP 3675491, owned by Dolby International AB. EP ‘491 generally relates to video coding techniques that use data hiding to decrease bandwidth. The patent is related to patents that are designated essential to the Access Advance patent pool and has also been identified as potentially essential to the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard.

$2,000 for Vilox search engine patent prior art

Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 6,760,720, owned by Vilox Technologies LLC, a Texas-based NPE managed by inventor Joseph De Bellis. The ‘720 patent relates to a method and system for a dynamic search engine that facilitates search-on-the-fly/sort-on-the-fly capabilities. The invention is about enhancing search and data display techniques, particularly on various devices including handhelds, phones, GPS devices, and computers. The patent has been asserted against Salesforce and Oracle.
