$2,000 for IP Edge entity, Lilly Pathway, prior art

On September 7, 2022, a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, was added seeking prior art on U.S. Patent 7,715,564, owned by Lilly Pathway, LLC, an IP Edge entity. The patent generally relates to at least two terminal apparatuses using content data in accordance with license information which is generated by a content distribution system to which it subscribes. A conversion apparatus includes a working area for storing license information which is compatible with one of the terminal apparatuses, and a central processing section for converting the license information stored in the working area into license information which is compatible with the other terminal apparatus. Thus, there is provided a conversion apparatus which can convert one's own license information so as to be passable to others. The patent has been asserted against Polaris, Deloitte, Salesforce, The Coca-Cola Company, and Georgia Pacific.

The patent generally relates to a wireless device can initiate a network connection without using a network operator's home location register. The patent has been asserted over 40 times against companies such as Frontier Communications, Teladoc Health, Ringcentral, and Discord.

On August 26, 2022, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 8,229,409, owned by Silent Communication, LLC, an NPE and DynaIP entity. The ’409 patent relates to recovering calls after an erroneous disconnection and has been asserted against Adobe, Fuze, and Lifesize.

IP Edge entity, Backertop Licensing, patent challenged

On September 2, 2022, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 10,728,382, owned and asserted by Backertop Licensing LLC, an NPE and entity of IP Edge. The '382 patent is directed to securing and providing mobile device access to a network based on a determined location of the mobile device and whether the mobile device complies with restrictions required by the particular location. The patent is currently being asserted against August Home and Canary Connect.

Toronto Globe reports on Unified's in-depth portfolio analysis of Blackberry and its delayed sale to NPE

At the beginning of 2022, BlackBerry announced that Catapult IP Innovations Inc. had agreed to buy several patents in a deal worth over $400-million dollars, but by June, the deal was off. Unified’s Director of Analytics, Sam Baird, analyzed the potential value of the divested portfolio of 37,175 patents, which would be one of the largest patent deals in the past decade. Mr. Baird has noted the buyer’s cost could exceed $900 million USD, including related maintenance costs, prosecution fees and litigation costs.
