Federal Circuit affirms Unified's win against Barkan

On March 2, 2021, the Federal Circuit affirmed the Patent Office's final decision, in a summary Rule 36 affirmance, confirmed that Barkan Wireless IP Holding's U.S. Patent 8,014,284 was mostly unpatentable. The Court also upheld the Board’s decision that Unified’s members should not have been named as RPIs as unreviewable after the Supreme Court's ruling in Click-to-Call. In every challenge at both the PTAB and the Federal Circuit, Unified has always been confirmed as the sole real party-in-interest in its filings.

$2,500 for prior art on IP Edge sub, Decatur Licensing

On February 23, 2021, Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,500 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 9,706,476. The patent is owned by Decatur Licensing LLC, a subsidiary of the prolific NPE, IP Edge. The '467 patent generally relates to obtaining radio access network information and transmitting location information between at least two base stations, e.g., in a 5G network. It is currently being asserted against ASUS, Samsung, LG, and Motorola.

Karamelion reexamination request granted

On February 25, 2021, the USPTO granted Unified's request for ex parte reexamination, finding substantial questions of patentability for all claims of U.S. Patent 6,275,166, owned by Karamelion LLC, an NPE and affiliate of IP Edge. This order comes just under three weeks from the filing date. This patent relates to relaying communications to appliances from a central computer and has been asserted against smart home products in over 40 district court litigations.

On February 25, 2021, Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 10 of U.S. Patent 8,209,411. The patent is owned by the most prolific NPE assertor in 2020, WSOU Investments, LLC d/b/a/ Brazos Licensing and Development.

The '411 patent generally relates to systems and methods of providing content to a terminal and, more particularly, relates to systems and methods of providing content to a terminal having a limited display area for presenting such content. The '411 patent is currently being asserted against Salesforce, in the Western District of Texas.
