Software subscription services patent added to PATROLL

On January 16, 2019, Unified added a $1,500 contest to PATROLL seeking prior art for US 9,805,349 owned by Rain Computing, Inc. (an NPE). The '349 patent generally relates to methods and systems for delivering software packages to client terminals based on a subscription service by which a user is charged for specific applications that the user is subscribed to use.

MV3 Partners patent challenged as likely invalid

On December 31, Unified, represented by Erise IP, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 8,863,223 asserted by MV3 Partners LLC (an NPE). The ‘223 patent, directed to receiving media content formatted for a mobile device having a small screen and upconverting it for a larger external display, has been asserted in 3 district court cases against Best Buy, Kohl’s and Roku.

Vindolor LLC patent challenged as likely invalid

On December 31, Unified, represented by Akin Gump, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 6,213,391 asserted by Vindolor, LLC (an NPE). The ‘391 patent, directed to a portable system for electronic personal identification and authentication using a uniquely identifying trait of the user (such as biometric information), has been asserted in 11 district court cases against such companies as Petco, Walt Disney, Restoration Hardware, Verifone, Trader Joe’s, and others.

MobilePay patent challenged as likely invalid

On December 31, Unified, represented by White & Case, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 9,800,706 asserted by MobilePay, LLC (an IP Valuation Partners subsidiary and well-known NPE).  The ‘706 patent, directed to the use of the audio port on a mobile phone to communicate with a peripheral device (such as a keyboard), has been asserted in 5 district court cases against Bank of America, Mindbody, Intuit, and Paypal.

Pure Data Systems patent challenged as likely invalid

On December 31, Unified, represented by Haynes & Boone, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 5,999,947 asserted by Pure Data Systems, LLC (a Dominion Harbor subsidiary and well-known NPE).  The ‘947 patent, directed to distributing changes made to a database to one or more client computers, has been asserted in 16 district court cases against such companies as Electronic Arts, Spotify, CNN, CBS, Pinterest, LinkedIn and others.
