Uniloc patent challenged as likely invalid

On September 27, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 6,564,229 owned and asserted by Uniloc Luxembourg S.A., a well-known NPE. Uniloc has filed 67 suits in 2017 to date, including 9 suits involving the ‘229 patent. Litigation over the '229 patent, which relates to a move/copy interface that is provided with a pause feature, is currently pending against Akamai, Big Fish Games, Square Enix, Kaspersky Lab, Nexon America, and Ubisoft.

General Access Solutions patent determined to be likely invalid

On September 26, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 9,225,555, owned and asserted by General Access Solutions, Ltd., an NPE.  The '555 Patent, which relates to IEEE 802.11 / Wi-Fi and other wireless communications between a base stations and mobile stations, is presently at issue in two pending district court cases against Pantech and Xiaomi.

Equitable IP patent challenged as likely invalid

On September 24, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 7,281,135 owned and asserted by Pen-One Acquisition Group, a subsidiary of Equitable IP, a well-known NPE. The '135 patent, which discloses a pen-based transponder identity verification system, was first asserted earlier this year against Apple and Samsung.

Realtime Data patent challenged as likely invalid

On September 22, 2017, Unified filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against U.S. Patent 8,717,204 owned and asserted by Realtime Data, LLC, a well-known NPE. Realtime has filed over 100 suits, including 12 suits involving the ‘204 patent. The '204 patent, directed to methods for encoding and decoding data, has been asserted against such companies as Echostar, Carbonite, Netgear, Oracle, and Barracuda Networks.

MyMail patent determined to be likely invalid

On September 13, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted trial on all challenged claims in an IPR filed by Unified against U.S. Patent 8,275,863, owned and asserted by MyMail, Ltd., an NPE.  The '863 Patent, directed to methods of modifying a toolbar to facilitate internet traffic, is presently at issue in four pending district court cases against YahooIAC Search & MediaOovoo, and Comcast.
