General Access Solutions patent challenged in IPR filed by Unified

On March 30, 2017, Unified, represented by WilmerHale, filed a petition for inter partes review (IPR) against all claims of U.S. Patent 9,225,555, owned and asserted by General Access Solutions Ltd., an entity which appears to be controlled by Michael Hynek of Dallas, Texas. The '555 Patent, which relates to IEEE 802.11 / Wi-Fi and other wireless communications between a base stations and mobile stations, has been asserted in multiple district court cases against Novatel Wireless, Xiaomi, LG Electronics, and Pantech

Convergent Media Solutions patent invalidated in IPR filed by Unified

On March 29, 2017, the Board in IPR2016-00047 invalidated all challenged claims of a patent owned and asserted by Convergent Media Solutions, LLC, a subsidiary of Strategic Intellectual Solutions, LLC. Strategic Intellectual Solutions, a notorious NPE, is responsible for filing dozens of infringement actions against operating companies in 2015 and 2016.

In addition to agreeing with Unified's arguments on the merits, the Board further granted Convergent Media's request for adverse judgment on two additional claims of U.S. Patent 8,640,183 (related to a system and method for navigating hypermedia using multiple coordinated input/output device sets). The '183 Patent has been asserted in multiple litigations against defendants such as Netflix, Hulu, Roku, and AT&T

Intellectual Ventures patent instituted on multiple grounds in IPR filed by Unified

On March 28, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted an IPR petitioned by Unified on a patent owned and asserted by Intellectual Ventures I, LLC.  The Board instituted trial on multiple grounds against U.S. Patent 6,775,745 (discloses a "hybrid data caching mechanism" originally assigned to Roxio Inc.).  

The '745 Patent has been asserted in district court litigation against EMC, Lenovo, and NetApp.

Digital Stream patent instituted on all claims in IPR filed by Unified

On March 14, 2017, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) instituted an IPR petitioned by Unified on a patent owned and asserted by Digital Stream IP, LLC.  The Board instituted trial on all asserted grounds against U.S. patent 6,757,913 (relating to "Wireless music and data transceiver system").  The patent had been asserted against, inter alia, automotive companies.
