Kevin Jakel

Founder / CEO

Kevin Jakel is Founder and CEO of Unified Patents.  Prior to founding Unified Patents, Kevin served as Intuit’s Head of IP Litigation.  Kevin previously practiced as a patent litigator with Kaye Scholer LLP and Howrey LLP and advised clients on intellectual property strategy, litigation and patent prosecution.  Kevin began his career in IP as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.  Kevin has a JD from George Washington University Law School and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA.

Shawn Ambwani

COO / Co-Founder

Shawn Ambwani is COO and co-founder of Unified Patents. He is responsible for running Unified’s operations, membership recruitment and marketing. He has co-authored papers on PTAB analytics and procedures which have been published in law reviews affiliated with the University of Chicago and Northwestern among others. Most recently, Shawn was VP of Licensing and Business Development at Intertrust Technologies, Inc. responsible for patent and technology licensing programs with over $500 million in revenue.  Prior to that he served as EVP at Nextreaming (KOSDAQ) and co-founded Envivio (NASDAQ; ENVI). Shawn has a JD/MBA from Boston University and a BS in Mathematics from UCLA. He is an active member of the California Bar.

 

David Potts

Senior Vice President, Business Development

David brings almost 30 years of IP management consulting, software and business development experience. Prior to joining Unified, David served as VP of Client Development at RPX Corporation (NASDAQ:RPXC)  where he played a major role in building out RPX’s client base starting in 2008.  Prior to RPX,  David was owner and principal of Cascade 10, LLC, providing online strategic planning and business development services to the automotive, financial services, and real estate industry.  David worked at The Cobalt Group (now CDK Global) overseeing business development to automotive OEMs and dealers including GM, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota.   In 1992, David co-founded Ledge Multimedia, a software consulting business subsequently sold to Dataware Technologies in 1995.  David also worked for ATKearney/JSA and General Electric. David has a BA in history from the University of Virginia and an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.

 

Jonathan Stroud

Chief Patent Counsel

Jonathan manages litigation, appeals, PTAB proceedings, licensing, and settlement negotiations, legal strategy, and prior art analysis, and prepares, drafts, and files proceedings for Unified.  Previously, he litigated at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP, before the PTAB, in district court litigation, and on appeal, and prior to that he examined implantable medical device patents at the USPTO for 5 years. He interned at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) for Judge Robert K. Rogers, and earned his J.D. with honors from American University Washington College of Law; his B.S. in biomedical engineering from Tulane University; and his M.A. in print journalism from the University of Southern California.  He regularly speaks, writes, and lectures on patent law, and is an adjunct professor of law at American, teaching PTAB practice.

Christine Bante

Vice President of Business Development

Christine is Vice President of Business Development, focusing her efforts into building deep personal relationships to help grow Unified’s existing membership base.  She is also responsible for managing ongoing client relations and market strategy.  Previously, Christine was with Transpacific IP since 2009 where she served as Vice President of Business Development, responsible for North American growth initiatives with crossover responsibilities to select European and Asian clients.  Christine has over 10 years of experience with identifying and executing on unique patent acquisitions, monetization and licensing opportunities.  Prior to Transpacific IP, Christine was at Ocean Tomo under the Transactions group where she contributed to millions in asset sales through their auction platform.  Christine holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Missouri - Columbia.

 

Sam Jaffna

Legal Counsel

Sam has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent litigation. Sam is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Rice University.

Roshan Mansinghani

Senior Patent Counsel

Roshan initiates and litigates PTAB proceedings for Unified Patents. Previously, he practiced at Baker Botts LLP for over 9 years. There, he had a sophisticated intellectual property practice involving patent litigation, patent portfolio development & evaluation, and patent licensing, particularly involving electronics, software, telecommunications, mechanical arts and other cutting-edge technologies. Roshan interned for Judge William Justice in the Western District of Texas, and earned his law degree at the University of Texas at Austin. He also obtained a B.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from Rice University.

 

Robert Jain

Legal Counsel

Robert graduated with honors from Santa Clara University School of Law in 2015 with a certification in high tech intellectual property law. Prior to joining Unified, Robert clerked for Judge Paul S. Grewal at the U.S. District Court in San Jose. He is admitted to practice in California.

 

Zach Guo

Lead Software Engineer

Zach's work ranges from back-end APIs to front-end web apps, and from machine-learning to data visualization. Before joining Unified Patents, he did research in automatic text classification, data-driven linguistics and primate behaviour. He has a Master in Computational Linguistics from Indiana University.

HISAO YAMASAKI

President, Unified Patents Asia

Hisao manages Asia for Unified.  He is Founder and CEO of Syndefense. Prior to Syndefense, he served as the President of RPX Asia. He also held a 25-year career at Hitachi as General Manager of IP Business Development and Licensing, responsible for all business aspects of intellectual property assets, including licensing strategies and operations, and patent portfolio balancing transactions such as acquisitions and sales. Hisao serves as Professor in the Faculty of the Graduate School of Intellectual Property at the Osaka Institute Of Technology. Hisao has a LLM from the University of Miami Law School and a LLB from the School of Law at Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan.
