On December 17, 2015, Unified Patents ("Unified") petitioned for inter partes review (IPR) of U.S. Patent 9,043,093, owned and asserted by American Vehicular Sciences, LLC ("AVS"), an Acacia Research Corporation (@Acacia_Research $ACTG) subsidiary. On September 1, 2015, AVS filed cases in the Central District of California, asserting one patent. In those cases AVS is represented by Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing (@AZALaw) and Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth. AVS claims its patents cover automotive side-curtain airbag systems. Unified independently petitioned for IPR challenging claims 1, 8, 10, 12, 17, 18, 19, 26, 27 and 36.
