Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 10 of U.S. Patent 9,179,147, owned by Malikie Innovations Limited, an entity of Key Patent Innovations Limited. The ‘147 patent relates to the use of soft decisions and iterative coding in Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and H.264 compliant video encoding. The patent has been asserted against ASUSTeK and Acer.

Unified Patents added a new PATROLL contest, with a $2,000 cash prize, seeking prior art on at least claim 1 of U.S. Patent 10,893,095, owned by Edge Networking Systems LLC, an NPE. The ‘095 patent relates to a network architecture that facilitates secure and flexible programmability between a user device and across a network with full lifecycle management of services and infrastructure applications. The Distributed Software Defined Network (dSDN) disclosed is an end-to-end architecture that enables secure and flexible programmability across a network with full lifecycle management of services and infrastructure applications (fxDeviceApp). The patent has been asserted against Microsoft.

Bedrock IP entity Cobblestone Wireless 4G/5G patent challenged

On March 26, 2024, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 7,924,802, owned and asserted by Cobblestone Wireless, LLC, an NPE and entity of Bedrock IP Co., Ltd. The ‘802 patent relates to wireless communication systems that transmit signals simultaneously over a communication channel at different RF center frequencies. The patent has been asserted against Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Cisco, HP Enterprises, and CommScope.

Vision Works IP automotive patent found invalid

On March 13, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of the asserted claims of U.S. Patent 8,437,935, owned by Vision Works IP Corp., an NPE. The ’935 patent generally relates to a vehicle monitoring system for turning off an idling engine. The ’935 patent was previously asserted against Mercedes-Benz USA and Nissan and is currently being asserted against Subaru and Volvo.

Broadphone tracking patent found invalid

On March 13, 2024, the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU) entered a final rejection of claims 24-32 of U.S. Patent 8,594,698, owned and asserted by Broadphone LLC. The ‘698 patent generally relates to determining the location of a device based on the relative signal strength for each of a plurality of nearby, identified “antenna stations” and determining whether the device is within the proximity of a “device-specific target location”. The patent has been asserted against Samsung.
